You know there has been this thread going around about what to call this
music we love. Why be so anal? Call it Fred. Who cares what you call it
we all (some what) know what it is. We love it. Acid Jazz or Acid
Elephant! Who cares. That is the ultimate beauty of music, the continual
progression of the evolution/revolution of it. The reason I got into
dance music (way back in the late seventies) is that dance was (and still
is) the most innovative form of music around. As a musician (musicians
tend to be the most anal of all music listeners) tend to category music.
Who cares! The exploration of music is the one of the most beauties of
music. Not restrictions. No rules. Keep expanding. Who cares. Acid
Flamenco House Salsa Bossa Nova Subterrian Abstract Bach. Its all good.
Keep on mixing, keep on shifting.

P.S. You will never get people to conform to rules on the subject section
of e-mail.
P.P.S. I say lets call the list Raul. Its at the end its not the name but
how we interpret it.

I think that statement should be the be-all, end-all to this discussion.
I've always liked this kind of music, and when I finally found a name for
this stuff, I posted a message on some newsgroup back in '93 or so
asking,
"Is there a mailing list for Acid Jazz music somewhere?" And somebody
gave
me the address (those days in the old uhawaii server). I don't think we
should deny anyone in the future that same convenience.

p.s. The discussion on both renaming the newsgroup and possibly
re-aligning
it (splitting it into a "news/reviews" list and "discussion list" really
hit
home for me today when I was talking on the phone with a friend and list
lurker/new member who asked me, "So, are they gonna change the name of
the
list or what?" I assured him that THE TOPIC has surfaced many times
before,
and that it would probably never happen. He told me "That's the kind of
stuff that wastes my time," implying that (being a fan of the music and a
club promoter) he'd rather read up on news about artists and new
releases.
I understood his point exactly.
Note that every day we see "UNSUBSCRIBE" messages.
I hereby propose the following:
1) We keep public discussion threads to a minimum. Once a topic,
especially
a recurring topic has gone 3-4 posts - by the same people - it should go
private. All parties should make an effort to do that, and if they want
multiple participants, it's their responsibility to CC: it to the
appropriate people.
Of course, now and then there are certain topics that impact many people
on
the list. Those could be left alone; the impact should be obvious.
2)We add a one-letter code (see the header for this post) to each heading
for the following categories:
A: ANNOUNCEMENTS - bands, DJs, clubs, labels, new web pages, plug here
(i.e.
West Coast Harem live, DJ Bambi spins this Fri. night, Fog City's Groove
(something) Web Page, etc)
C: CALENDARS for clubs/events in a particular city or region (i.e. L.A.
Acid
Jazz Happenings, What to do in London 1st week of November, SF clubs,
Osaka
scene info, etc)
D: DISCUSSION about the music, the list itself, etc. (i.e. "Renaming the
List", "What is Acid Jazz", "Musicians Vs. DJs", (most infamous examples
chosen on purpose :)))
N: NEWS about various artists, clubs, tours, etc. (i.e. Ronny Jordan
dates
in NYC, New Acid Jazz club in Toronto, Jamiroquai's US album release
date)
R: REVIEWS about particular albums, singles, compilations, concerts (i.e.
Review of new Incognito album, New Kruder & Dorfmeister single, New
"Totally
Wired" release, Maxwell's show)
U: UNSUBSCRIBE (self explanatory) :)
Cool?
