Hello all,
...don't know if this got into the discussion earlier but I just popped
this one in and had to say something...
"Sweetback" is the self-titled debut by a trio who were apparently the
backing band for Sade (any confirms on this?). I was really impressed
with my first listen through since I wasn't expecting much when I put it
on. It features lots of rich instrumental and vocal textures over an
electronic background (rather spacey). Guest vocals by Groove Theory's
Amel Larrieux (great), Maxwell who croons, Bahamadia who raps a bit, and
a couple others.
The Fender Rhodes and Tenor Sax featured in several tracks give it just
the right touch of jazzy flavor while turntable and CD scratching,
trip-hop beats thrown in and a mess of ethnic instruments keep things
fairly interesting all the way through. Keep an eye out for it and get
a listen if you can...
