ALOHA! From Hawaii!

To echo Jon Jung... Hawaii's jazz scene is embryonic and located
mainly in Honolulu. AJ offerings are even more limited to a very few
DJ's, venues and transient artists. Underground club scene here is
like "a revolving door." Generic dance clubs abound. The current
Honolulu night spot that does the best job of lounge, hip-hop, and AJ
is 1739 Kalakaua Nightclub & Lounge located at same. Youngish and
inconsistent, however. Phone: 949-1739. Jungle in Waikiki does an AJ
thang from time-to-time. For the real down-low on Hawaii Club Scene e
Mark Chitton at mark@smileyface.com. He pens a Weekly column called
the "Club Scene." Unfortunately, his tongue-in-cheek club reviews
reflect he has little appreciation for the AJ phenomenon, but it's
clear he gets around and parties hard. Jazz promoters are again few.
Call Ab Winestein at "Jazz Hawaii" (737-6554) for current happenings.
There's a (rather High $ End) Maui Jazz Festival in the Summer and an
annual Hawaii Jazz Festival in Honolulu but the dates/acts aren't set
to my knowledge.
