Hi Jon:

Yeah, I do Coconuts every few months or so. It's big band thang
actually. Abe Winestein is the promoter -- mentioned in my prior msg.
The Jazz Hawaii Big Band is made-up of (what I think are) music
teachers, military jazz band members, assorted local enthusiast and
wannabees. From time-to-time they feature a guest vocalist or
musician like Gabe Baltezar or Azure McCall -- two of my local favs.
It's a booming sound they make in that tiny venue I might add. They do
a novel thing to raise money, whereby benefactors are encouraged to
endow a jazz classic. I think the money goes to by sheet music and
such... and whenever they play the music they acknowledge the
benefactor. It mostly attracts the local blue hair heads, tourists
residing at the Illikai and a few young sophisticates.

On random other nights at Coconuts they feature AJ'ish Fusion, Latin,
and Bossa for example. That's where I caught Sandi Sukiyama who is
actually native Japanese with time spent in Brazil. I understand she
teaches at UH. What I don't know. Next time I see/hear of a decent
(non-Monday) event there, I'll give you a shout.

Oh! A year in Japan? That sounds fun yet austere. I really like Towa
Tei -- the leader who I think is Japanese formally with Delite. The
other day I almost bought this Japanese AJ artist named Goto. Sax
player? I have one of his singles on an "After Hours" Comp. All my
jewels are at home so I can't recall all the dope. I've been to Japan
and really like it. Last August I spent 10 days there part work part
play. Good music stores but outlandish prices of course. Is this a
foreign study tour, gig or a protracted holiday? Are you in Hawaii to
study? Graduating soon?

P.S. No car brah. I too take The Bus or ride my bike.
