I think that the *ORIGINAL* version was done by, of all people, Woody Herman
and the Thundering Herd when both Donny Hathaway and Phil Upchurch were in his
band. I have an album from '69ish (the title of which I forget, something like
"Heavy Feeling" on Cadet Records) that has the first known performance I've
heard. It's a bit rawer than Donny's own solo version (on "Extension Of a
Man") and George Benson's (on "In Flight"). Haven't heard the Black Sugar
version admittedly, though.

For anyone who may know Woody as being a swing guy, check out his recordings
from around '68-'74....there's funky stuff abound and lots of great beats,
electric piano stuff, etc. to be sampled.

Can someone on the list tell me who did the original version of
Valdez in the Country ?

I have 3 versions:
Donny Hathaway (Extensions of a Man)
Black Sugar (Black Sugar II)
George Benson (In flight, i think)

I like Donny's best. Are there any more versions ?

Thanx in advance.
