Red Clay is a 6-7 piece band from Los Angeles, CA, USA. Their sound ranges
from acid-jazz/jazz-funk to samba and bossa-like grooves. Basically they're
an acid jazz band that's heavily influenced by Latin and Brazilian rhythms
and sounds. Also their sound is more on the rare-groove tip, as they have a
standup (acoustic) bassist and Hammond organ. The band is led by alto
saxophonist David Brown (whom I've recently served as the official liaison
between him and Paulo; Paulo emails me, I call up David and tell him the
news, vice versa). Other members include bassist Bill Markus, a familliar
fixture in the Los Angeles jazz scene (he also does a straight-ahead jazz
gig at 5th Street Dick's) and trumpet player Elliot Caine, once a member of
the legendary L.A. acid jazz outfit The Solosnics. Indeed they sound
different from the Solsonics, but they have the exact same vibe.
They have a CD out called "The Lower City," which was actually made in
1994, which includes the cuts that Paulo's been playing. David also
informed me they're working on another release to be completed by the end
of the year; both are self-produced albums.
As for gigging, Red Clay plays almost exclusively in the Southern
California area, with occasional San Francisco and San Diego shows now and
then, I believe. They also play every other week at the Lava Lounge in
Hollywood (on La Brea, north of Sunset) and occasional shows at The Atlas
Bar & Grill/Supper Club on Wilshire. Their next big show is on May 2 at
the "new" (the place has been there for years, but they just recently
started becoming a concert venue, which is cool) Hollywood Athletic Club
(on Sunset & Schrader in Hollywood).
