As Mark mentioned, one of the advantages that the UK has over the US, is
it's geographical size. This enables nationwide press (NME, Mixmag et al...)
to be able to cover the entire country, increasing the speed in which
breaking 'scenes' are popularised and populated. There can be a bit of a
'build em up, knock em down' mentality though
We also have good national radio coverage here. I know people are constantly
moaning about the content of for eg Radio 1 (one of the national, state
funded stations), but compared to radio available to the majority of the US,
it's very left-field. For example, listen to the 'Evening Session' or 'John
Peel' on www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 and you'll here a good variety of the stuff
discussed on the list.
Having lived in the US for a bit (albeit Missouri), I was amazed how
difficult it was to find any radio/tv/press on anything slightly
'alternative'.... I'm sure that is true of most areas outside NY, LA or SF !
