Dear List:
I f i could i would get an Mpc-2000. Dj shadow used earlier versions of
the
MPC that dont even loop and look what HE did. Plus Teddy Riley ,
Timbaland, etc . It all comes down to 1) do you have a pc with
Sequencing/
editing(with Time stretching)/ andrecording. Look, The Asr-10
is cool if you want the sampler to double as a synth and if you're gonna
play some notes at some point(!!).AND it is True that the Rza , who 1st
cut his teeth
on the EPs(my axe), uses an Asr-10. And if you need built in time
strectching(speeding up without the alvin and the Chipmunk/Smart E's
"sesame street" sound) and time compression(the reverse) it is great for
that. Plus Waveboy (also in Pa )can add filter resonance with a plug in
plus a Voder sound as well. If you have a P.C. to do some editing then
you dont need this as much but if you are going to hook up something
then put it on tape yeah go for it. I know the Automator says that the
triggering is soft on percussion things(Urb future 100 issue) and that
is my experience with the Eps. By this I mean the "throw" or punch as
the sample is triggered. You can edit velocity but for some thing like
stuttering drums live and chopping up drums you may ned something else.
Now maybe sequencer software can fix this if you have a PC. I dont know.
It may do to use Opcodes Vison or somesuch(which has better clock
resolution than the Mpc.)
The Mpc is a drum machine and has the Percussive action and attack of a
velocity sensitive drum machine. It has a great feel(Teddy riley does
his swingbeats on MPc Products since the 80's). It does not have the
Time stretching.
Eps is cool if you get an expanded one for less than 500. At this point
who needs 13.5(compressed) bits when you can get 16 bits for 500 +.
Check the catalogue for the Ms-1. I dont know if it filters but again
if you have a P.C. with software(freeware avail) fine. then again if you
have a P.c. with software The Eps is a good deal at 500-600. Just do
your sequencing on the P.C.
I almost had my heart set on an MPC2000, and then something
hit me last night. Do I maybe want a keyboard sampler? I
was looking at an upstairs records catalog, and they had an
ASR-10 in there which looks dope. They said it is what
RZA, Extra P, Large Proffessor, the Roots, and many others
use as the staple of producing hip hop records. I've heard
people sweating those a lot in the past. Also the EPS
seems to get a lot of hype. The other thing I'm not sure
about is the sequencers on them...MPC has 64 tracks, and
seems to be a lot better. ASR 10 is 8 tracks, virtually 10
tracks, also has a less powerful sampler, filter, display,
and other elements, yet is $2000. I've heard people saying
they get used EPS's for $500-$600. Can somebody help me?
