I'm enjoying the thread about this make your own compilation
idea, but i just get the feeling it won't change the musical
landscape too much because people are basically too lazy,
forgetful, ill-informed whatever to actually sit down and
decide for themselves what songs to put on the cd. i know
i probably would be.
i will confess to something: i can
buy cds from tower records in the us and return them for a
full cash refund. i also have access to equipment and cds
right on my desk in my office to copy the songs onto the
hard drive and burn a compilation cd. but i have never once
constructed my own cd from disparate sources.
in fact i rarely even go to the whole effort and take back
the cds i want to copy in their entireity. last time i bought some
compilation cds and liked them so much i just kept them. it
cost me $35 or so and i really couldn't get motivated enough
to take them back in the 30 days i have available to me.
and it's not like i am so rich - i'm just a graduate student who
supports himself.
i don't know, maybe i am just a completely lazy sod, but i don't
see many people like me working out what songs they like and
making a cd. it's too easy to get ready made comps or albums
that are great anyway. of course, as a niche market it will be a
great service and record companies would do well to support it.
but all this user-effort is gonna kill this one dead!
now how about ready selected lists of tracks that are compiled
by someone whose opinion you trust - that would be fantastic.
