(Disclaimer: I don't work for Toninho Horta's broadcasting)=20

Some Brazilian artists have been doing jazzy music with a funky flavor =
since the late sixties, when the funk was introduced in the country. But =
what is Brazil acid? It's definetly not that music carrying similarities =
with foreign acid jazz or funky music, but a pure Brazilian popular =
music with funky flavors.
Some very well-known artists, like Antonio Carlos Jobim, did the roots =
of Brazil acid. "Boto", from Jobim's album "Urubu" (1976) has a funky =
groove holding typical Brazilian popular harmonies.
But the ultimate recording of Brazil acid comes from another artist, =
guitarist, songwriter, arranger, producer and singer Toninho Horta.
Toninho has a recording career that started in 1976 with his debut =
recording, "Terra dos P=E1ssaros", where he was already going funky, =
with trademark guitar chops, particularly in the song "Serenade". But it =
was not until 1994, when "Foot on the road" was released, that Toninho =
set the standards of Brazil acid, with the song "Tecno Burger".
Toninho uses a very special technique on his acoustic guitar: he uses =
the three upper strings to do the bass, and the other three for =
harmonies, in hypnotical two chords and a variation. The result is a =
killer groove.
The melody is very simple and sounds like a lullaby, which makes the =
song still more hypnotical. Toninho provides a lot of fun with his scat =
vocals, while two kids rapping keep da phunky flava.
It's worthy to check it out. "Foot on the road" was released by Polydor =
Japan but seems to be out of print. Anyway, the artist can be contacted =
at thorta@freemail.globalsite.com.br , and he is about to run his own =
recording label.
Here's the best of his discography:

1976/79 : Terra dos Passaros (killer funky)
1980 : Toninho Horta (killer funky)
1988 : Diamond Land
1989 : Moonstone
1990 : Once I Loved (acoustic jazz)
1992 : Durango Kid
1993 : Durango Kid 2
1994 : Foot on the Road (The best)
1996 : Serenade (live in Seoul)

If anyone wants to check out Toninho's music, I can be helpful.

Groovz alwyz,
Alexei
