Here's an unexpected treat that the good folks at Drop Beat picked
out for me yesterday. It's a benefit compilation of ethno-dance
tracks, along the lines of other recent world/dance crossover
projects like MUSIC WITH NO NAME or BRAZILIAN EXPLOSION. It's
hard to classify the music except to say that all tracks feature
samples from ethnic sources and are primarily trip-hop or dub in
nature. The album was compiled by Manchester's One Tree Island
organization, and benefits the World Development Movement, a UK
organization striving to raise the standard of living in Third
World countries. Here's the tracklisting:
Rae and Christian - Northern Sulphuric Soul
Freakniks - Kalimba (Flute Mix)
Mr. Scruff - Chicken in a Box
Fourth World - Jive Talk (Rolling Gait Mix)
Thievery Corporation - Universal Highness
Natacha Atlas - Duden (Spooky Day Trip to Sousse)
Fila Brazillia - A Zed and Two L's
Dubmarine - Dub Systems Go
Riz Allstars - The Garden
Riz Allstars featuring Ishu - Dub Oppression
