I even heard a slightly jungley track by LAMB on the J's breakfast show
this morning! They used to have a good show called The Groove Train hosted
by DJ Andy Glitre which had, as the name implies, a lot of groove-based
music. Andy was tempted away from the 'non-commercial' government run
Triple J network into the big bad world of commercial radio on MMM-FM (?)
where he had a nightly spot for a short while. A very short while. MMM
suffered in the ratings (overall, not just Andy's show) & decided to do a
programming shift - back to the mainstream stuff. Goodbye Andy after about
a month or something. Last I heard he was DJing at a country radio station
somewhere and at the Stag Hotel in Adelaide quite regular. Triple J is
also good in other areas, like World Music...they have an excellent World
Music show hosted by Jaslyn Hall. They *do* get lots of points for trying
but the majority of their listeners are demanding the 'alternative' stuff.
('alternative' *is* mainstream now isn't it?). As for the rest of the
radio networks,... in Adelaide we have a low budget tryer in 3D-FM who'll
play just about anything. All the commercial networks seem to play a long
tape on a constant loop that sort of starts and ends with the Sultans of
Swing etc etc etc etc. I have friends who are on this diet of music & I
run some of the acid jazz/jungle type stuff past them and it is a pleasure
to see them enthused by something new. Most are completely in the dark
about music and think that nothing has changed musically, since the 60's.
It's our job to thrust some real music in their face and get them
converted!

Acid Jazz uber alles. :)
