In the United States, you have to pay large radio stations to play your
records. It's called payola. Major record companies spend tons of
promotional dollars paying independent promoters around the country to
influence airplay. The money that is spent is often charged back to the
artists. Some independent promoters are known to have mafia ties. An
interesting book that I read on this subject recently is entitled "Stiffed."
I do not believe that radio in other parts of the world are corrupt like the
US. For example, I can pick up some AM radio stations from the Bahamas.
Their stations pretty much play whatever they want. I get to hear some
interesting stuff this way, such as gospel calypso music, which I really
enjoy a great deal.
