Thanks for the props, G! We do broadcast at 100,000 Watt, however,
which makes us a not so small station!

But why are radio stations on the air anyway? For me to play a great

Well, those commercial stations are exactly that: commercial! They play
what their "researchers" determine they should play to ensure the
greatest audience for the "segment" of music they're playing. Its all
about advertising,... and perhaps some payola, although I don't think it
happens as blatantly as it used to.

The problem with the "research" is analogous to the "chicken and egg
theory". In other words will you ever have a "researcher" approaching
someone in "the hood" or in the "burb" with the question "how do you
like this Ninja Tune track?" That's too complex for the station! It's
gotta be "homogenous" (the reason why most songs sound alike).

Three solutions:

1. Pick your favorite tune that you think may fit on a radio stations
format (i.e. "Virtual Insanity" Jamiroquai for an urban station). Then
select 20 of your most trusting friends and tell them to request the
song at a particular time on a given day. Instruct them to tell all
their family members and trusted friends to do the same. Make sure the
station has the song to play and watch the results! (beware! you'll have
to listen to the other songs, which are not always all crap, but become
crap, after you hear them 28 times in a 6 hour span)
2. Tune in to your "college" or "public" stations, normally situated at
the left of your dial (in the Houston area: KPFT 90.1, esp Sat
9pm-midnight).
3. Buy mixed tapes from your favorite djs (i.e. ME) and turn the radio
off!

My two cents
