Just thought I'd comment on this Rare Groove- Acid Jazz roots thread
....
Didn't rare groove originally start out as a soul/funk thing in the
UK with Norman Jay and others in the mid 80's ?
I remember reading an NME article in the 80's,, and JAZZ wasn't a
part of it, but 'Acid Jazz' kinda came into it through a post-rare groove
revivalist movement in parallel to rare soul/ funk movement, but on the
Prestige/Fantasy/others, jazz tip ?
I remember a rare groove top 10 which, if I can recall correctly, included
James Brown (Don't tell it / Stone to the bone)
Gwen McCrae (All this love I'm giving)
Jimmy Spicer (Dollar Bill) old school hiphop
Loleatta Holloway (Hit and Run)
Maceo & the Macks (Cross the tracks)
The Naturals (Funky Rasta) [btw, anyone give us info on this trak?]
I don't see much stuff here that I'd call Acid JAZZ roots,
but from my understanding of Rare Groove, staple rare groove
that I'd recommend to Tahira would be the Urban Classics Vol 1/2 and
the 'Got to get your own' compilation.
The 'diggin' in the crates' culture which we all love and enjoy
has no doubt led to extensions/reinterpretations of the rare groove idiom
and jazz is unavoidable here !
But, look at the Mastercuts Rare Groove Compilations too.
There are 80's electro numbers (You need a change of mind). Jazz?
Ones definition of rare groove differs from the other,
but we're ALL the richer for it. Some seem to have emphasis on the
RARE (bordering on obscure / unique!!), some on the GROOVE.
I remember the first time I heard a Luv N Haight compilation, it was like,
< damn !!!! >
<What i couldnt fathom was the fact that DJs had been playing this
stuff in clubs for near on 20 years !! (Hey, I live in New Zealand)>
& others like Soul Jazz Records ,love it all !!!!
....................anyway, back to work :-(
Peace y'all.
