Dear List:
as a beat buyer( i hate to use the word finder since i get most of my
stuff off dodgy comps and fsh from the plant reissues) I have come
to notice something odd: two songs have, in their various
versions, been sampled by a lot of rappers. The songs in question are
Get out of my life woman and the look of love.
it s not that one version has been sampled i.e George sempers
version of" Get Out ... " but that any number of covers have been
sampled. This is even more surprising when you consider that both of
these songs are themselves minor songs. They werent anybody's idea of
classic even in the sixtiesand yet everyone covered these songs And
the covers are worth sampling.
1 Get out of my life woman:
almost everyone who uses this song gets something from the intro. In
all but one case its the drumbeat. Exception:Big Joe Turner had a drum
and standup bass intro that was used by Kool g Rap for Lifestyle of the
Rich and Infamous. Even Hendrix did a version of this tune. I have a
comp by "from the basement composed" entirely of drumbeats from
various covers of this tune. 2 The Look
of Love: This tune is a Bacharach soundtrack tune from Casino Royale. In
the sixties everybody did a version of this tune as an album track. And
its a shitty tune! Yet Isaac hayes did a version that is the bomb track
to LLs "Hollis to Hollywood" and he wasnt the first to use it. Johnny
Pates version was used by Fat Joe and the Smith and wesson. I have
not heard Acker bBlks version but I know he was this M.O.R. guy who did
covers of EVERYTHING and he has a version. Tip : dont by the Tijuana
Brass version ;it sucks. I just think its weird that two
shit tunes were oft-covered then and sampled now. Ps skip gladys Knights
cover of "Look" too . Pss: pardon my nonuse of caps.
