Following the recent thread, thought I would put up this find. Dug
this promo(?) copy out of a used bin a few weeks ago and have
finally given it a fair listen. Track listing and my blow by blow
follows:
Kosma : Arena - mellow waves washing over trumpet hook/solos and
acoustic guitar noodling, sweet.
Exodus Quartet : Red - another track from the '96 Instinct full
length "way out there" (pick it up if you see it). sax and keys,
nice but unremarkable.
Blackanized 360 : "Vibe"rations - whispered riff throughout (I got
the rhythm, you got the rhythm - c'mon), hiphop beats, soaring sax
work, shifts gears a few times, fffonky, my pick of the litter.
Ollano : Partir Revenir - french female vocal, latin vibe, strings,
guitar riff, easy sunday morning stuff
Taran : Sputnik Code - cosmic R2D2, horns echo across channels, a
bit tiresome but has its moments.
Sharpshooters : Feeling Fine - muffled mix, vibes, flute, steady
(read boring) beat, I hit the forward button.
Obo : Major Keyhole - keys, no drums, skronky saxes way back in the
mix with one up front, lasts about 1:30... why?
S-Tone inc. : The Sweetest Thing - sophisticated rhythms w/ shakers,
congas, bells and a trap set, repetetive female vocal, smooth
clarinet(?), dense, cool.
Le Gooster : Elements - ding ding ding bap bap, deep beats, vocal
swirlies, scratchin, asshole puckerin muted trumpet. put on the
headphonz and chill... definitely gotta find some more stuff by this
crew.
Tarkomaz and Spiralman : La Notte - dark plodding beat, more muted
trumpet, crisp driving piano. so-so.
Mr. Electric Triangle : Under the Sun - Mr. Bangs with a warm fuzzy
mix overlaid with clean spanish sounding guitar and flute, some
other subliminal shit goin on.
Funki Porcini : Purrfect - out there as usual, scratchy stuff goin
round and round, bass way low, cymbal crowns real high, sounds like
some real cat purring at the end. nice closer.
Overall, probably not worth full price when it hits the stores. Now
I get to slip this in the CD case so I'll have a clue when I pull it
out again in the months ahead.
I have to agree that AH1 is the strongest release. The last track -
Hedfunk, "the dawn" is a sleeper, a great rhythm excursion with some
spine chillin moments. Take the CD out again and try it. Enjoy.
