And it often shows. I've noticed in looking back at those recordings I
treasure from years past that it's usually a group's first album. I've
always tended to blame this result on a group's popularity and tendency
to direct their effort toward a larger audience but maybe that's not the
case. Rather, it's the time that it takes to refine a sound, sort of like
storing wine in oak barrels so it picks up the flavor of the wood...
