Something in the Air

A couple of people have asked about the French group Air,
so I'll tell you what I know.

Air are Nicolas Godin and Jean-Beanoit Dunckell. Their
first effort ("Modular") appeared on the first SOURCELAB
compilation and was remixed on a Source 12", then later
licensed to Mo' Wax for subsequent remixes and compila-
tion appearances.

Track #2 was "Casanova 70," from SOURCELAB 2 and again
remixed on 12". SOUCELAB 3 featured the sublime "Cosmic
Bird," a collaboration between Air and famed electronic
pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey. (Where are the remixes of
this one???)

Air specializes in a kind of romantic, nostalgic sound
that de-emphasises beats in favor of mood. They record
all the instruments for their tracks at home, using a
single microphone. They believe this technique for
recording *in air* (rather than using samplers or other
electronics) is what makes their tracks unique.

Air's forthcoming debut album has been licensed by
Astralwerks for the U.S.
