This week we go back, waaay back in some cases. I'm sitting in for the
show before me (Milestones), a "straight ahead jazz" show, tonight, so I
get an early start (7:30) to do the Rare Grooves Thang (until 11:00 pm)
Highlights: Alice Coltrane's "Galaxy Around Oludumare," (17
instruments) which I selected off Energy Essentials (Impulse
compilation, 1972), a three vinyl set which also includes John Coltrane,
Pharaoh Sanders, Albert Ayler, Charlie Mingus, Max Roach, and others.
Also Buster WIlliams' "Vibrations" feat. Roy Ayers; when Roy came
through Houston he encored using that song,.. but on the "synthesized"
vibes. My fave off the list: "Keep Your Soul.." by Freddie Hubbard.
In the mix I start and end with Jamiroquai because of the confirmation
of the show at Rockefellers on 5/23/97. We are making the "official"
announcement tonight, after the mix.
The Old School Hip Hop Pick is the "Talkin' All That Jazz" mix which
samples (and loops) Donald Byrd's "Dominoes." Gotta put another track
from Mushroom Jazz (OM) in the mix; just can't put that compilation
down! Had to put a Lamb track in there; if I'm paying $20 bones for the
import, I better put it to use! And last but not least MoFunk's got a
nice sampler: Nordic Trax, from which I pulled Ignatius' "Hide N Seek";
very smooth!
