No kidding!
This one raises an interesting question for me ... IMO the recorded product
sounds good, and I'll keep listening to it, but that could partly be coz
there's a lot of distance between me and NYC and I dont know whether
they're just biting other people's shit or not. I had a similar dilemma
with the first Groove Collective album. I picked it up when it came out,
loved it, and had a friend in NYC at the time so I mentioned them to him.
He saw one of their gigs advertised ("10 piece jazz funk with MC and
turntablists" etc) and went, but no rapper and no DJ showed, and the gig
was apparently lame. How can you like these guys?, my friend asks me,
they're just cashing on on the whole jazz rap thing and not even
delivering... but I still love the record (and I'm sure all their gigs
aren't like this).
Anyway, hopefully you'll get a laugh out of this ... I picked up Groove
Collective's We The People for the same price in the same discount bin! And
I'm digging that too.
