absolutely, "Drum & Bass for Papa" has CONTENT as well as style - Luke
Vibert really put a lot of effort into some of the tracks on that album.
While listening to it two days ago, i realised that tracks like 'Delicious'
are the aural equivalent of intriguing and well-furnished rooms with draws
that need undivided attention if they are to be opened, and high shelves
which can only be examined if you stand on the tips of your toes.
Excellent jungle has space, texture, speculation, autonomy, friction,
esoterica and humour - a lot of Bukem's stuff, while inoffensive, is merely
easy on the ear - the musical equivalent of programmes about other people's
holidays - nothing to make you think.
What I want to hear is a menagerie of breakbeat lifeforms in a shifting
bass landscape. In contrast, I fear LTJ creates and compiles polite,
musically competent tunes for the coffee table.
