Are we getting a bit elitist here? I can't see how any one
selection can be more "valid" than another. I don't think you
can say that Terry Callier has more substance than Photek, or Roy Ayers
is better than Roy Keane or vice versa. As Mr Gram Parsons
(not very acid jazz - more cosmic american country) said, "there's
only two kinds of music - you either like it or you don't".
Anyway, here's mine:
1. Esther Phillips - Set Me Free
2. Parliament - The Silent Boatman
3. Hank Williams - Lovesick Blues
4. L Double & Younghead - New Style
5. Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno
The problem with my top 5 selections is that they generally change
every hour on the hour, so I hope I never get picked to go on Desert
Island Discs.
MY CLAIM TO FAME: I was in the cub scouts with the bloke out of
the Sneaker Pimps - a fine Hartlepool lad, whose favourite group I
seem to remember was The Barron Knights (don't ask).
Finally, belated thanks to everybody who got back to me with details
on Paul Weller's version of "Mathar" - haven't got hold of it yet,
but got it taped by the esteemed Mikey Cullis (Yo! Mikey! Shouts!).
Peace, brothers and sisters,
Sniffer.

Is this yor all time top 5 or just your current top 5 plus 5 others? If
it is you must be a newcomer and have yet to appreciate some of the more
serious grooves of yesteryear. No I am not stuck in a time warp but an
all time top 5 without the likes of Johnny Hammond or Donald Byrd, James
Mason and many more that wouldn't make it an all time top 5 doesn't seem
to have any substance to me. But please lets not have an all time top 5
as I may well have to dig out some of that old vinyl and when that
happens nothing at home ever gets done.
