I got a copy of it from Flight. A hype tape feat. the underground
stylz of hip-hop (the freestyles, DJ sessions, rhymes over classic breaks) from
Chicago. Definitely need more tapes like that circulating around spotlighting
hip-hop in places and spaces around the world.
Ok...Ok...I'm in. My top five:
1) Wood, Brass, and Steel - "Funkanova" is the bomb!
2) The Roots - ORGANIX - if vinyl is still appreciated in twenty years, this record will
be hanging in Bleeker Bob's (a pricey NYC collector's store) for
at least $100. Future rare groove.
3) Genya Ravan - same title - found it the other day in the dollar bin - she was the
singer for a classic rock group called Ten Wheel Drive. She
does a cover of the Grateful Dead classic "Turn on Your Love lights"
that sounds like Masters at Work feat. India - no joke.
4) DJ Moonstarr - "Hex" - a single just out on the new Whatnaut? label out of Toronto. IMHO
it's a time machine - as a premier city for jungle vibes, the city's
talent is finally coming out on wax. This track paints a picture of what
will be coming hard in '97.
5) Sun Ra - Space is the Place.
