most of the good subs are indies which have contracted with major for
distribution. personally, i don't have a problem with this - 4 years ago i
had to ask a friend in the uk to go to a shop, buy me a fila brazillia disc
and ship it over here (and i live in la for cryin' out loud). now, pork
recordings are available in local stores (thru world imports distribution, i
think). labels to check out (generally high level of a & r) include: pork,
shadow, quango, instinct (acid jazz- watch out for their ambient - its
spotty), crammed ssr (belgium), g-stone (the most excellent kruder +
dorfmeister label). those are a start anyhow.
now, elson you should check out kcrw at 89.9 fm at the following hours:
mon and wed at midnight to 3 am - shortwave (bruno guez) - very cool after
hours, trip hop, acid jazz, and world
mon, wed, thur, and fri from 8 pm to 10 pm - metropolis (jason bentley) -
modern electronica and dance
sat from 10 pm to midnight - worldwide (gilles peterson from london) - acid
jazz
a few weeks of this and the spice girls will sound like what they are -
commercial lightweight dance pop.
also, if you club - bossanova (at the pink in santa monica) thursdays from 10
pm- 2 am is guez and bentley dj'ing with guests as they cointo town (note
these two guys are quango records - so their contacts are superb eg, peter
kruder guested a couple of months ago).
