Dear Feesh: I
am also a wannabe producer . I started out wanting to do hip hop but the lack
of rappers has turned me to trip hop and dance. My main axe is an ensoniq
"classic" bought "used" for $650 3 years ago. It is 13.5 bits compressed
which it makes it better than the much loved sp 1200 especially, when you
consider memory. However ther are some good new samplers out that you can get
that have 16 bits. At 16 bits you hardly lose any clarity even if you resample.
This is great if you make something on your four track with different
samples then you want to loop the composite and put the new groove on one key.
This hepls if you have no sequencer and you dont want to overdub the horn sample
for the whole five minutes manually. By the way there are some gemini and
numark mixers that will do this but they arent as easy to edit loops with. The
Roland sampler that was advertised in urb and is feature in Upstairs records
ads(in every issue of the Source ) looks good for 499.00. It has more Punch than
my ensoniq as iot is equipped for single shot(ie snare hits) and looped
samples. Punch is literally the force with which the sample is thrown out
piano or drum style. I also have an
item in the musicians friend catalog for a phrase sampler by roland. This is
designed for guitarist who want to take a guitar phrase from Eric, Pagey or
wes loop it slow it down so they can copp the lick. To this end it has time
compression which slows down the lick without changing the pitch . It sells for
$219.00. markeg@hotmail.com
