The only headphones that have lasted 8 years of daily studio use in our
studio have been a pair of Sennheisers - HD450's I think. Sennheiser use
a kind of flexible plastic which, although it may seem fragile, actually
holds up pretty well. All the parts are replaceable as well.

I've heard that Grado make pretty good headphones - but I've yet to try
a pair. You should also take a look at the Beyer range. Their DT100 is
an industry standard and they have an improved version with a more
extended frequency response called the DT150. You may not find these
at Hifi shops but studio suppliers will almost certainly have them.
