I just wanted to pass on a word of advice to listees who's towns are soon
to experience the OM produced "Deep Concentration" tour - don't miss it!!!
Here in Toronto, the show was absolutely excellent w/ TO's own dj Grouch
kicking things off in fine style. He was followed by Montreal's 15 year-old
scratching prodigy dj A-Track. The reasons why this kid has been winning
some mighty big international competitions is pretty clear when you see him
in action - wow! Cut Chemist and Peanut Butter Wolf did a great set
together, with PBW doing some fine scratching and adding lotsa flavour to
Cut's mix.
Things got even better - and here I lost track of order of dj's 'cause I
was so enthralled - in the next half the night. Kid Koala (Montreal) did a
totally gorgeous set, changing moods 'n flavours throughout and coming up
with some incredible beats & breakbeats in the process. He and A-Track also
did a fantastic set together, where the variety of their skills was well
represented. Koala also did another mindblowing set later on, one which
blew me away and one that I hope, I hope, I hope will be recorded. I love
the fact that he plays the most hip hop and party oriented sets at Ninja
Tune shows and then, at this hip hop flavoured event, he played the most
abstract stuff. Man....his and A-Track's cutting & scratching techniques
are something to behold.
I've also gotta mention that all the dj's did a *wicked* set together,
totally tag-teaming it and seeming to have a hell of a lot of fun. Needless
to say, the crowd was loving it. Also, special props have to be given to
Cut for his later set - the crowd went beserk when he was mixing up those
funky old 45's. Nice, really nice. His live rendition (with PBW) of "Lesson
6" was also fantastic to witness *and* when he (somewhere in the night)
dropped in Laurie Anderson's "O Superman" and totally created something
brand new out of the "ha ha ha ha..." opening of the song, well... headz
just went mad!
A totally incredible evening and fine show...one that still has people
buzzing around town. Props also to promoter (and fellow listee) Carlos
Mondesir and Hot Stepper Promotions 'cause he did a great job of organizing
things & getting the crowd out. Thanks Carlos, thanks OM and thanks to any
of the involved dj's who might be on this list. Over 'n out.

up on the 'net around the 3rd to 5th of the month. Thanks.
