Hi people
just to add a bit to this CTI thread, I've also picked up some of the stuff
Freddie Hubard did for CTI, and it's excellent. This is generally
acknowledged to be a good period for him I think, incorporating some
groove/funk into his sound without losing the intensity of the jazz vibe.
The "Sky Dive" album, and the two volumes of "In Concert" featuring Stanley
Turrentine, Herbie Hancock (on electric piano), Ron Carter and Jack
DeJohnette are fantastic, with basically one tune per side. I think it's
volume 1 of this series that includes a live version of the track from Sky
Dive called "Povo", which many will recognise coz it's been sampled by a
few people (incl Guru on Jazzmataz v 1 if memory serves). The live format
gives them a chance to really stretch out this tune to way over 10 minutes
- it's all way funky, and the solos get very heavy. Definately worth
picking up if you see it around....

While I'm here, here's some other things I've been listening to lately...
Jhelisa, Language Electric
Finally picked it up cheap and I'm not disappointed ... another great,
richly varied set of tunes from her...
Force One (compilation of Australian drum and bass)
Little bit of cultural nationalism never hurt anyone! This is a good
compilation of hard tunes and a great way to showcase some local talent,
which tends to get overlooked in the flood of European and US product.
Still, it's easier for these local d&b artists to blend in with the
overseas product than local hip hop artists, because listeners aren't
confronted with Aussie accents when there's no MC! I wonder sometimes to
what extent people producing this music are *partly* doing it because it's
easier to hide their identity and what the political implications of this
are .... but that's another thread ....
D*Note, The album
Enough said on this one already ... I love it!
Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, 1 + 1
Nice collaboration, definately a late nite album but there is still emotion
and exploration in their playing, and they weave their playing together
beautifully ... mellow but never bland ...
Buena Vista Social Club
This is a great collaboration of various Cuban son musos with Ry Cooder,
who produces the thing. Very slinky latin grooves ... traditional vibe but
still very vital
OK, time to go eat....
