when i was in college, i took one of my school's most popular courses,
'structure of the new york mambo: microcosm of black culture.' one of the
course requirements was to attend and participate in group capoeira class.
that course, and the professor, robert 'master t' thompson, were major
inspirations for me joining the music biz. thompson would give out an award
every year (the brachman award) and have a big party for the winners; while
i was there he gave one to keith haring, and another to monica lynch of
tommy boy (my partner and i were dj's for the monica party, and tried
something we thought groundbreaking at the time--we added a live drummer to
our mix a la giant step, but this was ten years ago. if anyone runs across
a drummer with the great drummer name of legrand elabash, tell him i'm
looking for him).
capoeira = tai chi + breakin'
