Paul Ramsey- bass
=B3His current band Euphoria was a huge hit, Hamilton
squatting like a well fed spider smack in the center of
a web, bass skins thundering, cymbals hissing, arms
dealing powerful blows, driving his band like a boxing
coach, percussing with enormous power as well as tonal
subtlety: always the mark of a great sticksman. His reach
is long, his hair glistens, his shirt is open, his medallion
twinkles, for Chico is an entertainer supreme, a joker, a
no-bullshitter, a larger-than-all leader, but also, surprisingly,
an adventurous gentleman. No mainstream nostalgia here,
despite a playing history of such monumental proportions.
Instead, Hamilton looks forward, building structures not far
removed from those of Ornette Coleman=B9s Prime Time,
although more openly influenced by rock, funk and blues.
He splices many contemporary forms, coming up with the
distinctive Euphoria sound.=B2
