I have Moss Side Story from the late 80s. It has been a favorite for
years. At the time it was billed as a jazzie film noir soundtrack for a
movie that didn't exist. That sounds cool as hell today and right in
with everything we have been talking about this week. At the time
however, it was downright revolutionary. remember, this is back when
college radio still played Depeche Mode and the most exciting thing
coming out of England was the 12 year old band the Fall (members of The
Fall, by the way, play on Moss Side Story).

Don't misconstrue, however, this record is not acid jazz. There are
plenty of melodies and a few songs with beats, but the most noticeable
feature is a dark ass mood accomplished by an undercurrent of spooky
urban ambient sounds. Think of the Eraserhead soundtrack and John
Zorn's Naked City -- although infinitely more listenable than either.
The CD shipped with some "bonus tracks" (remember those?) including a
haunted rendition of the Alfred Hitchcock Theme.

If you can find this record, you will like it. Shit, now I can't get it
out of my head.
