it's a certain *type* of hiphop. i love hiphop, but i don't always get down
w/vadim's stuff--it's *really* slow, sometimes the beats are off-kilter, and

he's quite abstract sound-wise. i can respect where he's coming from (i.e.
trying to push the boundaries) but i pretty rarely hear stuff i would buy.
most of the ninja djs seem to be hiphop oriented, *especially* ollie from
herbalizer (i haven't heard jake, yet), strictly kev from dj food, and i
forget whether it's matt or jon from coldcut that's wicked on the scratch.
the vibe i got at the stealth shows were that these guys were hiphop djs,
but
w/a different frame of reference than "traditional" hiphop guys (that sounds

weird, but i think you know what i mean) in that they'll use anything in a
track; as an example nobody (making records) was sampling ofra haza before
the coldcut remix of "paid in full".

having said all of that, i do give the thumbs up to the pelding (prunes &
friends) ep w/"the skunk" & "politician", and some of the k'boro stuff
(sub-label of vadim's jazz fudge). the "disc-located beats" is a good beat
record w/some interesting scratches--and none of that one-scratch-into
-another-with-no-break foolishness!!

hey ninjas, what *is* up w/the lazy 9 kids? if i remember correctly, it's
*not* a coldcut side thing--and they perform live!
