sun should recognize the other "rewind" phrase, i'm sure...
the story i got on this tradition was from one of my "dancehall-enabled" dj
buddies, satta (aka louis)--1/2 jamaican w/yearly pilgramiges.
satta says that what would happen would be the soundsystems would drop their
new tunes (if you want to hear the tune, you gotta go to their party!) and
if
the crowd really dug it when it 1st got dropped (i.e. within the 1st minute
or so) the deejay (guy on the mic, *not* the one playing the records) would
call out "haul & pull!" and the selector would pick the needle up from the
tune already in progress, and place it at the beginning again. i'm quoting
from memory, so i could go and ask him again and post the reply... i think
i'll get some kind of confirmation from my partner jr. roach, too (he was
part of a jamaican soundsystem for a while).
anyway, it seems that the jungle version of this is that if the crowd goes
nuts during a tune (usually during the initial bass drop in) that the dj
will
rewind (backward cue to the beginning) the track, usually after prodding
from
the mc (at the roni size show sunday in l.a., bryan gee didn't always wait
for mc moose to call the rewind). the tune starts up again, and the crowd
cheers--there is also such a thing as a multiple rewind, rare, but not yet
extinct...
as far as the comment about the mic/line switch, if you're talking about
what
i think you are (drops, and/or transforming), it serves a totally different
purpose... i'll wait for clarification before i bite on that one!
