I had a chance to preview the new Gangstarr. I only heard it once so I
don't claim this is a qualified review but I really liked what I heard.
The only other Guru I have is Jazzamataz II, which is OK but Monument of
Truth blows that away. I didn't notice anything too innovative but the
beats were super fat all the way around, lots of piano and keys and (I
think it was Above the Clouds) a track with built with some asian
sounding strings. The rhymes were intelligent and positive with no
cursing, which is great for me, being a radio DJ. (I guess that right
there is pretty innovative).
On the jungle MC debate, one of the things that has always bothered me
about MCs has been the lyrics. They seemed always shallow and
uninteresting and I never much cared to hear them on the music I
bought. However, I recently had the opportunity to see Representz and
MC Dynamite was great, really working the crowd, not letting anyone just
stand and stare. The same goes for the MCs at a local jungle night we
used to have here, Jeffe would drop the tunes and if anyone seemed to
losing interest or slowing down, the MCs would hype everybody back up.
MCs seem to me to be a live medium, that just doesn't work as well when
your sitting by yourself at home.
good music to all,
sirka
