Hey Art, what's up. I think that you're right on the money about Afro-Cuban
jazz making a big comeback. I think the whole revival started with Ry
Cooder's disc, "The Buena Vista Social Club" which is selling an insane
amount of copies. Since then, alot of the older Afro-Cuban players like
Alfredo Rodriguez, Antonio Arcana, and of course, Tito Puente, have been
showing up on tons of new releases as well as having alot of their older
stuff reissued. The great Portugese singer Cesaria Evoria, has also
experienced a bit of a revival over the last few years, so I'm guessing that
people are beginning to dig the Latin sound a little more. I would think
that the tremendous album sales of the "Mambo Kings" soundtrack, as well as
the big Esquivel/lounge revival of a few years back probably contributed to
the success of Latin music today, but that's just me speculating. In any
case, I can't say that it hasn't had me digging out some of my old Latin
music on vinyl.
Later,
Stimpson
