i wouldn't compare them to portishead at all... i would really describe
them
as being more like sun ra w/a female vocalist. i also found out from jade
that at least half of the time she uses her voice more as an
instrument--i.e.
just for the sound of it... the music isn't as arranged as portishead,
either--there's lots of sections of free improvisation (irrespective of
harmonic or rhythmic constraints). it's a real head trip if you think of
them in terms of weapon of choice, because it's not really funk based at all
--though there are sections that utilize the band's intimate knowledge of
funk. it's really more like jazz *on* acid, than what i tend to think of as
acid-jazz--but that's my trip (pun *fully* intentional)!
