A third member of the group was an older guy who played tabla, bass, and
flute. (or maybe that was Sri?). On the album it's his voice that's saying
all the tabla sounds.
The setup had Badmarsh in the back laying down beats and samples from a
sampler/sequencer/turntable station. On the left side was a younger guy
playing tablas, and on the right side was the older guy alternating between
bass, flute, and tablas.
This was incredibly interesting b/c it was not your traditional arrangement
of instruments. They were obviously of the School Of Beats b/c the whole
thing was rhythm section (xcept the flute)
They played a magnificent set that consisted of some songs off the album and
some other ones - and probably the highlight was a tabla 'battle' between
the the 2 guys in front. It started out with a verbal exchange of rhythms
("Ta de de digi Ta tiki Ta") and switched into a tabla exchange, and then,
the guy on the left kept on the tablas while the older guy played his bass
like a tabla. Used Slap-bass techniques for the percussive sounds, and
moving up and down the strings to create the unique tabla warped-bass
sounds.... ill!
Also they were accompanied by a woman whose singing left much to be desired.
It's a good thing she only played for 3 of the songs. Otherwise I would've
gotten antsy.
If any of you gets a chance, and provided the Fuckin Government stops
droppin bombs and starts lettin people in this (and other) country,
definitely go SEE THEM!!!!
peace,
