Renter's insurance is the way to go--if you can still get it. It's
getting harder to find. I've got it with Allstate and they claim to be
the only ones offering it. It has save me twice--once in a burglary (TV
and VCR gone) and a year ago when someone smashed my rental car window on
a trip and took my backpack. It was a hot day and I had stuck everything
in it from my pockets. My laptop was there, wallet with credit cards,
driver's license, some cash, sunglasses, etc. The company covered
everything, including the leather backpack. Complete replacement cost for
the computer and most other stuff. Some things they depreciate. They even
paid for a new driver's licence and the wallet to put it in. Total loss
was well over $2,000 that time. Unfortunately, they had just raised there
deductible from $200 to $500, but it's still worth it, even to break even
after considering rates paid, just to know you can get something back
from such a loss. Keep your receipts if possible. Get a police report. No
one has mentioned that but they always ask for the police case number.
I've got a lot of CDs at home and keep all the receipts (in a fire-proof
box. A fire would be a big loss!).
