Studio 1, started by Coxsome Dodd in the early sixties, defined
jamaican muzak for some time. Not just Horace Andy, but almost
everyone you can think of got their start or recorded for this label
through the years, including a teenage Bob Marley (as the Wailing
Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer), and the Skatalites (whose
members played on the rhythms tracks of most of these records),
Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Dillinger, Johnny Osborne, Toots and the
Maytals, John Holt, ect...
Can't recommend this shit enough. Every one a killer, though Mr. Dodd
has been using the same master for his vinyl over the years, so if you
buy stuff on vinyl, sometimes the pressing are wack. Heartbeat has
been reissuing some very good albums on CD, if you're into that sort
of thing. Check out Dub Specialist (classic rocksteady tunes done dub
style--early early dub stuff from the '70s, the roots of much dance
muzak today) and Tribute to Jackie Mittoo (2 CD set that includes some
of the hottest licks from the Jimmy Smith of Jamaica).
Its a real tragedy that more people don't know about this stuff.
Everybody quotes Horace Andy, I figure because of his work with
Massive attack, but there are a 1000 other mofos who laid it down back
in the day. Dig and ye shall find...
