You have discovered one of the most important living jazz composers!
Threadgill had a band in the 70's called Air, before forming the
Henry Threadgill Sextet and then more recently Very Very Circus.
His original compositions integrate almost every style in the history
of jazz, while allowing plenty of room for free improvisation. In
addition, his bands often consist of very unique combinations of
instruments. He is a visionary artist, and I highly recommend you
check him out. I haven't heard any of the Air albums, but my
personal favorite Sextet recording is YOU KNOW THE NUMBER on RCA/
Novus.
There is no connection between Threadgill's Air and the French one.
