Dear List: I just went to the Big city (Phila.) and picked up some
items some people like to talk about whatthey got good cheap . Well
here is some stuff i paid for that sucked. 1 Jimmy Castor-Phase
Two- this one has "the hey Leroy " sample that the beasties used . Thats
why the guy charged 8 (vg-condtion) 1$ bills for it. Well thats all it
has .... literally "hey Leroy" . It not like he didnt let me play it in
the store. Actually i only played 1 cut as more than that would have
broke up his flowThe cut i requested was "firstTime Ever I saw your
Face, a cover of the Roberta Flack hit. It has a potential afterlfe as a
trip hop thing a la massive or Alpha if you hook up a beat but I
shouldnta paid 8 for it. Thats what happens when you buy a clasic sample
source on the strength of a of its notoriety.2) Blood sweat and tears 4-
peeeeyeeeeww. These guys I can get for a buck here in harrisburg and
they work on both levels a) they have samples 2) for a buck its worth
it. In phila I paid 2 dollars at armands. I get good stuff at
Armands(Steve millers very first lp for 2 bucks) but this was a blow.
Nada nothing and I hate the lead singer. I saw his solo album at Phila
record exchange (scene of the Castor debacle) and passed. While Im
pouring my heart out, an earlier trip yielded a dud with A Buddy Rich
album he of hendrix band of Gypsies fame. Think it was his first . It
was in good shape . I mighta paid 5 for it. unless you just like rock
music for its own sake, avoid. for thirty 3 cents i got nina simone
"Silk and soul" it has a good beat on one cut but she seeem to think
people want to hear her sing . So she does. she barely leaves any thing
for any body else and THAT has a horn come in on it. Plus its on the
right side which requires an extra step to get it. I also bought
a Sergio Mendez Brasil 66 for33 cents. I have hd some luck with m mendez
at prices like 50cents(also '66 but this one had the Look OF Love- which
s a tip off to buy it) and a dollar( i forget what year) plus i was told
that the core riff for" Wild For Da Night by Rampage is from one of his
albums so I bought it. No dice this one is for Latin fans. Its simply
named "Herb alpert presents...." pass it by. I had also wanted to ee if
therewere any Acker Bilk albums about( he was Atlantic MOR guy) but they
didnt have it. Which is funny considering how much lounge stuf they did
have. In fact they were quite sniffy( in the nicest sense) about not
having it. Funny, i dont see much Acker Bilk at the local salvation army
round her either and this is major Middle america here. On the other
hand, if Herb alpert becomes the godfather of some new sample based
genre i can get all his sixties stuff( not that i have it now except
"the look of Love"-again one of my immutable laws of beat hunting). I f
any of you come 'cross some Acker Bilk please review it for hip/trip hop
convertability. His stuff is in print but y'know... that 13. whole
bucks.
Which reminds me to post my own immutable Laws of beat hunting and
solici yours
