I forgot to mention some titles I snagged this week.
Eddie Henderson - Mahal (capitol 1978). This has the semi-classic
"Prance On" and features many members of the Herbie Hancock band, which
Eddie was a member of. Herbie, Benne Maupin, Paul Jackson, Hubert Laws
are here. It's produced by Skip Drinkwater. Anyone have more info on
this guy? He produced several cool records in the mid 70s.
Ahmad Jamal - Outertimeinnerspace (Impulse 1972). This is very spacey
jazz, with the cut "Bogota" that I *know* someone sampled, but I can't
remember whom.
Gary Bartz - Singerella: A Ghetto Fairly Tale (Prestige 1974). Post-
Andy Bey and company, but still an alright record. Larry Mizell did the
final mix. Not a classic but worthwhile for "Nation Time" "the Dozens"
and "St Felix Street," which I think was sampled.
Bennie Maupin - Slow Traffic to the Right (Mercury 1977). I really like
this record, the debut from the Hancock band member. Again, all of the
Hancock/Headhunter crew (Blackbyrd McKnight, Paul Jackson, Eddie
Henderson, Pat Gleeson) are here along with Patrice Rushen. Funky jazz
with the cut "Water Torture" that was featured on the Move to Groove
compilation a couple years back.
Freddie Hubbard - Polar AC (CTI 1975). Typical CTI fare, with an
all-star line up (Ron Carter, Lenny White, Junior Cook, Jack DeJohnette,
George Benson, Airto) playing that shiny CTI sound. Like all CTI
products, this has weak moments but it's worth it for the title cut and
the cover of "People Make the World Go Round." Also has "Son of
Skydive."
Gato Barbieri w/Lonnie Liston Smith - Bolivia (Flying Dutchman 1973).
People are always sleeping on Gato. He's one of my favorite horn
players, kinda like Pharoah Sanders at times but he's got his own
flavor. This is produced by Bob Thiele and features Mtume, Stanley
Clarke, Airto, and John Abercrombie in addition to Smith.
