Hi again,

Here are the groovy highlights from this week's show:

* Jungle Brothers vs. Aphrodite - "Jungle Brother" (Gee Street)
Aphrodite triumphs again with a powerful jump-up remix of
this classic track. A must-hear!

* V/A - 110% SALSOUL (Music Club)
Budget-label CD that rounds up many of the essential disco sides
from Salsoul Records, with excellent liner notes by Norman Jay.
A great introduction to the label.

* V/A - COPA MUNDIAL MUZIQUE (Guidance)
Yep, third week in a row and this still holds a place in my
top ten. Not a duff track on here!

* DJ Andy Smith - THE DOCUMENT (Phase 4)
Anybody who can mix Tom Jones and Peggy Lee with Grandmaster
Flash and Marvin Gaye gets respect from me!

* Talking Heads - "Houses in Motion" (Sire)
Nuff said.

* Mulder - "Don't Give a Damn/Can I Count It Off" (Urban Takeover)
A true double-A side here from Aphrodite and Mickey Finn's label.
One side samples Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" and the other
samples James Brown's "Sex Machine."

* V/A - RESPECT IS BURNING (Virgin)
Whoo-eee! Not only is Paris sleeping, but I've been sleeping
on this comp for far too long. Finally gave it a listen last
week and it's non-stop party-rocking house music. Highly
recommended!!!

* Pete Namlook & Karl Berger - "Polytime" (Fax)
Title track from the album of the same name, features a rarely-
seen funkiness from Mr. Namlook in this 15+ minute groove opus.

* Tied + Tickled Trio - TIED + TICKLED TRIO (Payola/Bingo)
Fascinating debut from this German jazz/electronica band. Alternates
between straight jazz, ambient techno, dub, and what-have-you,
confounding expectations at every turn. A band to watch!

* Joao Gilberto - BRASIL (WEA).
Outstanding late-70's album from the bossa nova master, also
featuring Gal Costa, Maria Bethania, and Caetano Veloso. How
can you go wrong with a lineup like that?

Which leads me into my big self-promotion: since the month of July
marks the official 40th anniversary of the bossa nova, next week's
show will be an all-bossa special. From "Desafinado" to RED HOT +
RIO, and all points in-between. For those in the Bay Area, I
regret to say the show will be on at the usual time (i.e., the
dead of night). But those elsewhere might be inclined to tune
in via the web at www.kfjc.org. I think it will be a fun and
educational show. End of hype.

I hope you find these weekly posts interesting.
Feedback is always welcomed.
