The Cold Crush Brothers' reputation as a pioneering old-school posse
is unassailable, so it's no surprise that such a stellar group of
hip-hoppers should come out to pay tribute to them. Rakim, of course,
is rap's often considered the genre's greatest MC, he's certainly the
most spiritual. KRS-One, meanwhile, is hip-hop's true blastmaster,
mixing political tirades with infectious block-party beats. Then
there's Doug E. Fresh, who blazed '80s party anthems like "The Show."
Guesting brilliantly at a recent concert by (The Artist Formerly Known
as) Prince, Fresh blew up the stage, cementing his rep as a live
performer. Add rap's relentless funnyman Biz Markie and unsung lyrical
pyrotechnician Big Daddy Kane, and you have the makings of a night for
the hip-hop history books. —Matt Diehl
