'Sup. A little while back, we had a fairly long thread which was =
dedicated to great vibe players; acid-jazz just sounds better with them =
in the mix, no? =20
In any case, after being disappointed with the quality of =
songwriting on Charlie Hunter's last record with Pound for Pound, I kept =
searching for some fresh sounds which featured the vibes and came across =
a Cal Tjader tribute by Dave Samuels called "Tjaderized: A Cal Tjader =
tribute". Now I know that many, if not most tribute albums tend to be =
weak, so I was pleasantly surprised that this one sounded excellent. =
Tjader's stuff sounds as fresh today as it did in the late 60's/early =
70's, and Dave Samuels interpretations easily sound as good as alot of =
the stuff that we've been hearing as of late. The style in which the =
songs are recorded tend to stay faithful to the original formula, =
meaning that you won't hear any samples, scratching, or rapping, but it =
grooves like a muthafucka!! Any fan of the vibes will definitely dig on =
this record deep. It's out on Verve records, for those of u who might =
be interested. Along with the new Beasties and BEP, it' on very heavy =
rotation these days. =20
