Well unlike Bristol, the scene in Detroit is not based on "clubs",
and if you went there clubbing you probably were disappointed.

Detroit has always been a haven for the undergroundest, and I don't
think that's bound to change. Kids from all over the midwest still
drive dozens of hours for all-Detroit techno line ups in obscure
ghost neighbourhoods and the sound is NOT very different from the
Detroit sound of years gone... same goes for Chicago and house
music (those two midwest towns complement each other, are definitely
the root of today's electronic soundscapes, and are generating so
much jalousy worldwide).

"motown schmotown, black or white, techno today sucks..."? mmmh,
maybe you're just missing today's good stuff. Go record shopping
more often. I don't buy much new techno because of my mainly
down/mid tempo tastes, but I hear tons of excellent new techno that
sounds just like way back when... go to the betalounge web site and
prove yourself wrong.

As far as techno being the new heavy metal, I'd answer by saying
that techno is the only heavy metal. If anything should ever have been
called heavy metal, it's detroit techno.

As far as race is concerned, it's about 50/50, whether for the crowd
or the artists. People here did not mention that for every Carl Craig,
there's a Plastikman. For every Claude Young, there's a Dan Bell.

How does it relate to acid-jazz? well some of the best detroit
technoist greatly contributed to electronic jazz, from Derrick May
mixes of La Funk Mob to Richie Hawtin mixes of Attica Blues.

not any more it isnt, count the techno clubs in detroit, play the kids
of
today paradise album by inner city and they wont acknowledge that as an
influence...

it pisses me off because in bristol city the majority of club nights are
techno, very different from the detroit sound of years gone... a higher
percentage are off there face and don't listen to the music as at other
clubs, the free parties are run by drug dealers... motown schmotown,
black
or white, techno today sucks...
