Talvin Singh's Anokha is the one to check out. Some delicious vocals by Amar
(she also has a solo album out, but I haven't heard that yet). Talvin's
forthcoming album has some great stuff by Bombay singer Shankar Mahadevan.

Talvin's album and Nitin Sawhney's as well feature only a couple of vocal
tracks each. Ditto for many of the other recommended albums - the outcaste
stuff, etc. Still, there's more soul here than in Deep Forest-style
sampling.

If you like Bally Sagoo's stuff, which is mostly pale covers of Hindi movie
songs, why not go to the source? Pick up an R.D. Burman compilation, or
anything by A.R. Rehman. This is definitely not electronica, but both these
composers are pioneers in mixing Indian and western sounds. Then there's
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who was the ultimate crossover- definitely listen to
the Massive Attack remix of Mustt Mustt.

More on this off-list if you're interested.

(By the way, Bally Sagoo has a couple of Indian releases you may not have
heard - one with superstar Amitabh Bachchan. His 'Bollywood Flashback'
spawned an entire remix industry here in India).
