i can happily report she's still on the scene! i just picked up a 12" of
hers called "stay"--it's a cover of sly's "if you want me to...". like the
original, it's more slinky, head-noddish funk than "omigosh-i-gotta-shake-my
-thang" funk. there's a blacksmith mix that's ok, but the guys gab a too
much
over their hiphop groove. the last mix is on the garage tip by booker t,
and
though i'm not really dropping much house these days, i have to say it's a
good mix, even though i probably won't be playing it.
if you find the single for "i wanna hold on to you" pick it up!! it's
really
dope, but the album that it's from is awful--it's produced by narada michael
walden (drums/keys for jeff beck on "wired", ex-mahavishnu orchestra,
founder
of the narada label, producer for whitney houston) and though i like some of
the stuff he's been involved in, this sounds like he'd just finished an
album for whitney, and was still in that mode...
some other stuff by her that's fresh are the tunes "south of the river", and
"i should have known better" (a b-side that's availible on "the rebirth of
cool too" (sic) uk version, produced by omar), and the theme from "young
soul
rebels" (on the soundtrack--which is a collection of essential classic soul
&
funk).
