Very very good:
My own thoughts? Quite enjoyed this first lot - sounded to me like the Major
Force Crew meets David Holmes. Definitely something daft to chug a couple of
early beers to.
Sakamoto - I couldn't quite get into it as it was so downtempo. Atmosphere
with everyone standing around looking a trifle bored didn't help either. But
like you say, the man is a legend. Maybe he should have reached deep into
that record bag and pulled out some old Yellow Magic Orchestra?!
Rob Swift pulled together some nice beats and pieces. Loved the thing with
just him playing downetempo beats over Hammond guy. But then I am a Hammond
fiend. I thought he got the crowd more into it which was what was needed.
Fucking loved Spooky. Dont really know anything about him. But as someone
who played 'cello I couldn't help just shaking my head in disbelief seeing
him hop around the stage playing one minute this then rocking beats on the
turntables then proselytizing on multiculturalism. I thought at times his
crew got it really really together - there was a guy on tablas; yes I think
the keyboard player was Israeli; and then he had Cozy Powell on drums - this
guy who was doing it very large - drum sticks flying through the air, then
between his teeth, then banging cymbals with his fists. Spot on c1975
hairstyle too. The crowd loved it. If you like a show go and see the Spooky
fellow. I see theres an interview with him in this months Paper Magazine (I
think this is on-line).
Tell you what I really really liked though was Luke Vibert set between Rob
Swift and Spooky. Never seen this guy before but the first couple of very
downbeat things he played were very very nice. The he got into some hip hop
towards the end. Anyone know what he was playing? Also, is this what he
usually plays out and what does he put out himself?
Unfortunaltey I am also an old Brit with a laptop and home in very unfash.
Connecticut so had to beat a hasty retreat at 1.00. But this morning woke up
with the great feeling of I stayed too short rather than too long.
Y - hope you make it through the day. Respect to 0 minutes shuteye.
Jim
